We have a new District within a new Conference here in the State of Michigan. This has been a long time coming with many trials and errors. The Lay Leadership of the Mid-Michigan District is coming together as a group in order to support one another and to advance God’s Kingdom here in this part of the State.
We have met on two different occasions. The first one was in February at Pilgrim UMC in St. Johns. This was an organizing meeting as well as being an introduction to our then new District Superintendent, Rev. Dr. Jerry DeVine. He shared with us the process of naming our new District in addition to his and the Vision Teams vision of what the new District will strive to achieve.
The second time we met was in June at the Lakewood UMC at which time we met the new Associate Director for Lay Leadership Development, Laura Witkowski. She shared her vision about her role in the new Conference as well as goals to empower the laity throughout the Conference. Both Laura and I shared a portion of our Spiritual Journey’s and encouraged those in attendance to share theirs with others.
Our next meeting will be on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at the Shaftsburg UMC. Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m. with worship starting at 9:30. The meeting will continue until approximately 11:30 – 12:00 noon. I am currently researching several topics as possibilities to discuss during that meeting and would welcome your input as well. We had briefly discussed the possibility of discussing “The Way Forward”, however, since then, the MIConnect has had several articles and/or videos about this topic. I would encourage you to stay informed through this resource. If you do not currently receive the MIConnect, you can get it through the Conference website.
Laity Sunday is October 21st. I hope you are making plans with your congregation to celebrate the role of the Laity in your local church as well as the District and Conference. If you need guidance with planning your Laity Sunday, check with your pastor for input. There are Certified Lay Speakers in our District that may be available and willing to assist as well. Once the EZRA Database is functional again, after mid-August, you should be able to contact the District Office for names and contact information of the Certified Lay Speakers.
In the meantime, have a great summer!
